During the Edo period (1600–1868), the Zen master Hakuin Ekaku, regarded as the founder of the Bouddhist school Rinzai, wrote Yasen Kanna (Quiet Conversations on a Night Boat). There, he describes the “method of inner contemplation” and the “nansō method,” literally the “soft cake method,” which consists of visualizing a warm, gentle substance slowly flowing from the top of the head through the entire body, dissolving tension, fatigue, and mental agitation.

Zen breathing is a modern systematization of these health practices, also designed to overcome serious illness. By practicing gentle breathing and correct posture—while deepening your understanding of respiratory mechanisms and the skeletal and muscular structure—you can release accumulated fatigue as well as physical and mental strain. You may also experience relaxation through Zen in a lying position (gyogazen), which involves breathing while precisely visualizing the body’s internal structure, following the soft sutra method.

Online reservations are available until the day before the event.
